How Long Do Keyboards Last?

As I have found joy in spending a lot of time writing on the computer – I’ve come to value the comfort of a high-quality keyboard. The wireless keyboard I’m using to type this has been with me for a long time, much longer than most other keyboards I’ve used. Generally, I wouldn’t expect to get 10 years out of a regular low-end keyboard, but I would certainly hope to get a few years of heavy usage out of a high-quality keyboard.

I have done some research on different types of keyboards from different manufacturers to find out which ones last the longest – according to the manufacturers themselves but also from the reports I’ve gathered from users. This article will mainly focus on the lifespan of wired keyboards, as I have already covered wireless and laptop keyboards in two other articles.

The life expectancy of a keyboard will vary greatly depending on the model and how the keyboard is used. The average lifespan of a regular low-to-mid quality keyboard is 2-4 years under heavy use or about 5 million keypresses. Mechanical keyboards are way more durable than rubber dome keyboards. In fact, a high-quality mechanical keyboard is expected to last for decades and be good for 20-50 million clicks.

One must take into consideration that a lot of keyboards malfunction because they have been exposed to food or liquid spill, smashed, or maintained poorly. There will come a time, after a couple of years, where the overall experience of using the keyboard will take a dip – but I think most keyboards wear out before that because of how they are used.

In perfect conditions, most keyboards will last for a very long time. Some types and models will last longer than others. Take membrane keyboards versus mechanical keyboards, for instance. There’s a big difference between the estimated number of clicks that these keyboards are expected to handle before they wear out. Mechanical keyboards can, in some cases, handle ten times as many clicks as a regular membrane keyboard before it wears out.

How Many Years Does a Membrane Keyboard Last?

While mechanical keyboards have separate keys, a membrane keyboard does not. Instead, the keyboard is designed in layers and the keys are much thinner. When you press a key, a pressure-sensitive membrane senses the touch and sends the data to the computer.

Membrane keyboards are cheap to produce, which is what makes them appealing. They’re not used a lot in homes or offices but are frequently used with medical and industrial equipment.

The average lifespan of a membrane keyboard is 1-2 years under heavy use, and 2-3 years of moderate use.

How Many Years Does a Mechanical Keyboard Last?

Mechanical keyboards are the most common type of keyboard available today. It’s most likely the type of keyboard you’re seeing in the office and at home. Mechanical keyboards have separate keys and have actual, physical switches to determine which key the user has pressed. When the key is pressed, its switch is pushed down, and the signal is sent to the computer.

The quality of the switches partly determines the lifespan of the keyboard. The better the switches are, the more durable the keyboard will be. The difference between bad, good, and superior switches is huge and can be quantified in tens of millions of clicks. Bad switches can, in some cases, withstand no more than 10-30% of what a superior switch can. In clicks, this difference can equal 20-40 million clicks.

Everyone doesn’t find this information fascinating, but because of the high-quality construction of these keyboards, they are much more durable than any other type of keyboard on the market. They also provide the best typing experience, in my opinion.

Mechanical keyboards can last for 10 years or more depending on how they are used, and how frequently. Mechanical keyboards with superior switches are often rated for 50 million keypresses, which equals a lot of time – even for the frequent and heavy user. If you replace separate keys when they break, you can expect the keyboard to last almost a lifetime, but the user experience will degenerate over time.

But…there’s more.

There are brands. Not all brands are equal. Let’s take a look at the different brands and what can be expected from their products.

How Long Do Logitech Keyboards Last?

When it comes to computer accessories, wireless or wired, Logitech is the name of the game. Logitech has a plethora of products and they seem to develop new products at an alarming but satisfying rate. If you’re reading this on a desktop computer, chances are that the keyboard connected to the computer is a Logitech keyboard – they’re huge when it comes to keyboards and other external devices.

Logitech has developed and sold keyboards for a long time, and they’ve certainly improved upon their flaws. Today, most Logitech keyboards are good-quality keyboards – and some are great.

The average Logitech keyboard can last up to 5-7 years of moderate usage. However, the keyboard can last for up to 10 years or more if it’s maintained well. The longevity of the keyboard will be determined by usage, exposure to liquid/food/dust, and maintenance. Most Logitech keyboards come with a 2-year warranty.

How Long Do Razer Keyboards Last?

Razer is a big name in the industry, particularly when it comes to peripherals made for gaming. Razer has a wide collection of high-quality keyboards suitable for both gaming, work, and home use. Razer keyboards tend to cost a little more but the price can certainly be justified by the quality of the build.

The average Razer keyboard can last for 5-10 years, depending on the model and usage. Razer’s more durable keyboards can withstand up to 80 million keyclicks, which equals decades of moderate use. These high-quality keyboards come with a 2-year warranty but these keyboards should be good for much more than two years.

How Long Do Corsair Keyboards Last?

Corsair is a company that develops computer components, such as keyboards, along with streaming equipment and other accessories. Corsair is a big name in the industry – but they’re not as big as Logitech, for instance. Regardless, the company has been able to develop high-quality products with long-lasting builds.

You can expect to get between 10 and 15 years out of a Mechanical Corsair Keyboard with Cherry Mx Switches, and about 3 to 5 years out of Corsair’s Membrane Keyboards. Corsair’s mechanical keyboards are very durable, and thanks to their switches, very good for demanding tasks.

How Long Do Gaming Keyboards Last?

Gaming keyboards must be durable as they are supposed to withstand intensive gaming sessions, which oftentimes include gaming-induced frustration and forceful pressing of the keys. However, these keyboards are, generally, not more durable than any other high-quality keyboard.

It’s therefore wise to spend some extra cash on a high-quality mechanical gaming keyboard, as the lower-end keyboards can stop working within the first couple of years, while a mechanical keyboard can endure years of gaming sessions before it breaks down, and when it does, replacing a mere key might bring it back to life.

A high-quality gaming keyboard can last for up to 20 years under the right circumstances, while a low-quality gaming keyboard can wear out within the first three years of using it. Going for a sturdy mechanical keyboard will increase the lifespan of your gaming keyboard substantially.

Not only are mechanical keyboards more durable because of their construction and their switches, but they’re also more resistant to water and dust. This is, of course, very important to factor in when creating a long-lasting keyboard, as they’re definitely going to be exposed to dust, and might very well be exposed to water too.

If you can reduce the impact of dust and water, then you’ve created a keyboard that’s capable of withstanding the two most common reasons for keyboard breakdowns.

How Long Do RGB Keyboards Last?

RGB Keyboards are color-generating keyboards with LED backlighting that projects the colors onto the keys. The user can choose to project any of the 16 million colors of the RGB wheel onto a single key, multiple keys, or the entire keyboard. RGB Keyboards come with software that lets you configure the keyboard to suit your needs or your desires. The keyboard can also be linked to create effects suitable to the events that are taking place on your screen.

Some people worry about the lifespan of the LEDs on the RGB keyboard, as they can be damaged from static discharge and shortages. It’s very rare that the diodes on the RGB keyboard stop working because they’ve been brought to the end of their life expectancy – they often stop working as a consequence of an event, such as a shortage.

The LEDs on an RGB keyboard are good for up to 50.000 hours, which means the keyboard can project colors 24 hours a day for more than 5 years before it stops working. With normal usage, you can expect to get 10 years out of the keyboard if nothing breaks.
